Lisa Schiavinato is the Extension Director at California Sea Grant. She joined the team in Fall 2016 and is responsible for directing the Extension Program’s growth, while providing vision and leadership for current and emerging extension activities that address California's critical ocean and coastal challenges. Schiavinato is an attorney, and she has worked in the areas of ocean and coastal law, property law, land use law, energy policy, wetlands regulation, and climate adaptation planning in the Southeast and Gulf of Mexico. Her work has included analyzing the legal and policy issues associated with social vulnerability mapping, North Carolina’s coastal wind energy potential, recommending for ocean management strategies and recommending strategies for managing the state’s estuarine shoreline. She is the recipient of the 2009 North Carolina Governor’s Conservation Achievement Award for Natural Resources Scientist of the Year. Schiavinato also received an Outstanding Extension Service Award from NC State University in 2015. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida and a law degree and certificate in environmental and land-use law from the University of Florida. Her work has appeared in a number of publications, including the North Carolina Law Review, the journal Coastal Management and the Sea Grant Law and Policy Journal. Schiavinato is a past president of The Coastal Society.
