John Westra is the Associate Director for Southeast Research and Extension District, Institute for Agriculture and Natural Resources, University of Nebraska and a Professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. He supervises research and extension faculty and staff across 19 counties and at two research installations in southeast Nebraska. Currently, Dr. Westra also coaches three disciplinary teams (agricultural systems economics, insect ecosystems, and translational plant sciences) and one interdisciplinary team (regional food systems) and at UNL. He also conducts research related to how agricultural and environmental policies influence farm management decisions and how those decisions affect farm profitability and ecosystem services. Prior to UNL, he was a Professor at LSU for 15 years where he conducted research and delivered extension programs on natural resource economic issues in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness. He received a PhD in Agricultural and Applied Economics at the University of Minnesota (2001), an MS in Agricultural Economics at the University of Maine (1991), and a BA in Psychology at Grinnell College in Grinnell Iowa (1984).
